I pride myself in the fact that I can usually run a full day on roughly 6 hours sleep with a power-nap in the afternoon…but it would appear I have been defeated by the Christmas break.
I had a fantastic time during my trip home but after 10 days of having at least lunch and dinner out, often as well as cocktails or wine at night and 4 days of New Year celebrations which followed, my body has apparently decided enough is enough – also my jeans are screaming at me for having 12 days of no exercise whatsoever!

After a lie in until 11am on 3rd January to recover, I assumed business would resume as normal and I would wake up today at my usual 8am with a spring in my step. I could not have been more wrong! I was rudely awakened by my neighbours at 4am and was still awake (and very grumpy) when the manager of the residence turned up for my flat inspection at 9am. Needless to say I went back to sleep and woke up at 13.40 feeling like a waste of space but minus the lack of sleep headache. I still managed to visit the Musée de l’Orangerie, walk around Opéra and grab a coffee whilst reading my new book so all is not lost.
Moral of the story? Even the lucky ones who can function on very little sleep have to give in sometimes, It’s not worth the headaches. I predict my next mini hibernation due to sleep deprivation will be a few weeks into semester 2, after having spoken German non stop for the first time in months and staying up till the small hours googling every word in the language…
